Harbor Island is certainly a unique gem on the east coast of South Carolina situated on the St. Helena Sound. This private 1400 acre barrier island boasts 2 -1/2 miles of unspoiled natural beach, swimming pools, tennis courts, fitness center, sand volleyball court, 1/2 basketball court children’s playground, crabbing dock and an abundance of wildlife. Harbor Island is just 15 miles from Historic Beaufort.
Perfect Vacation Location
Harbor Island is a perfect vacation location for families and couples who enjoy the serenity of nature and a more “laid back” kind of vacation. Enjoy breathtaking sunsets over the marshes and watch dolphins play as they follow the shrimp boats. The island has five fresh water lagoons which provide nesting areas for several species of birds. In the spring you will find thousands of horseshoe crabs come in to lay their eggs. The beach is also a nesting spot for the loggerhead turtles.
The Perfect Spot
The tide fluctuates 4 times a day and can be quite extreme. The tide can go out far making the walk to the water a bit longer, but creating some interesting pools to explore. The island has several protected sand dunes covered with beautiful sea oats. There are plenty of boardwalks to access the beach. Harbor Island is the perfect spot for fishing, crabbing, shrimping, kayaking, paddle boarding and sunbathing!
You May Never Want To Leave
The surrounding area offers excellent fishing, golfing, boating and sightseeing opportunities galore. You may never want to leave the island, but if you’d like to see the sights, just 14 miles away is charming, historic Beaufort offering plenty of options for off-island enjoyment with fun boutique shopping, great restaurants and galleries, horse and carriage rides through the historic district filled with beautiful antebellum homes, and a gorgeous waterfront public park stretching along the Beaufort River where you can watch boats passing by or docking in the marina. Dolphin watch and other ‘day cruise’ boats leave from the marina and offer great opportunities to see the lovely lowcountry scenery from the water. If you are interested in exploring further afield, historic Savannah, Georgia and Charleston, SC are easy day trips. Savannah is a little over an hour away, Charleston about two hours. And the Hilton Head/Bluffton area, with outlet shops galore, is about an hour away.
